How To Tell It's Time for New Tires

Ford service near Delphos

It’s very easy at times to forget to maintain the tires on your car. There are a few warning signs to look out for to know when you should change your car tires, and our Ford service center in the Delphos area has tire care advice just for you.

Delphos Drivers: Checking Your Tire Tread is Easy!

One tried-and-true method of checking your tire tread is the penny test. Take a penny and put it between the treads on your tire with Lincoln’s head facing the tire. If you can see the top of Lincoln’s head, the treads on your tire are at less than 2/32 of an inch, which is the recommended time to get a tire replacement. If Lincoln’s head is consistently covered by the tread marks, the tread on your tire isn’t worn all the way down yet.

Uneven tread wear is another warning sign. Even if Lincoln’s head is covered by some of the treads, it’s important that the tread on your tire is wearing evenly. Treating your tires right should prevent uneven wear.

Most tires have wear indicators built into the rubber near the edge of the tire. If you can see these or your tires are making noises while driving, it’s time to get your tires replaced. Similarly, if you feel any vibrations while driving it could be a symptom of a misaligned or bent tire, which should get checked out immediately.

What If My Tread is Un-Worn?

Even if you aren’t a frequent driver and your tire tread looks un-worn, age is something to consider when wondering whether you should replace your tires soon. Tires normally last about six years, but according to most tire manufacturers the rubber on the tire degrades over time and should not be on a car past 10 years.
